  • UNICEF Ambassador - South Asia for Hygiene and Sanitation since 2013. This unique role allows him to be a voice heard by both children and their parents, and a highly effective messenger to spread the word about better health, hygiene and sanitation. • Ambassador, Swacch Bharat - He is also the ambassador of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, a campaign by the Government of India to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country's 4,041 statutory cities and towns. • Associated with Spreading Happiness, an initiative that involves tapping solar energy to generate electricity for homes that do not have access to the grid or other solutions for basic electricity. • Nominated Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from June 2012-June 2018. Adopted the village of Puttamraju Kandriga in Nernuru gram panchayat near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh under the aegis of the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) announced by the Hon’ble PM in October 2014 to provide holistic development to villages. The village was subsequently rated as one of the best in the country at a workshop for Rural Development and District Administration in India. He has recently adopted the second village under this scheme, Donja in Osmanabad (Maharashtra) under SAGY, emphasizing on development of a new school building, a water supply scheme that would provide potable water to each household, concrete roads and a sewage line.

  • Played first-class cricket for 25 years (1988-89 to 2013-14) and international cricket for 24 years (1989-90 to 2013-14). • Holder of the world records for the maximum number of matches and runs, and scoring the highest number of centuries and fifties, in Tests and One-Day Internationals (ODIs). • The youngest Indian to play Tests and ODIs. • The first player to complete the ‘treble’ of 10,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in One-Day Internationals. • The only player to score a century on debut in the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Duleep Trophy. • Represented Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2008 to 2013. He captained the side from 2008 to 2011.
